Investment oversight service

Provide a holistic view of the family assets and deliver on-going investment advice

Facilitates timely and informed decision making.

The family have a number of structures which house a diversified mix of investments. In order to monitor and analyse their holdings, they required a detailed report which aggregated their assets and identified exposures (geographies and sectors), themes, and factor and concentration risks. In addition, under an advisory mandate, they sought stewardship in the form of investment guidance and recommendations to ensure their portfolio was positioned for long-term growth.

The solution was a bi-annual, deep dive report that has facilitated informed investment decisions to ensure the portfolios remain relevant in an ever changing world.  This has delivered strong performance, in excess of the MSCI AC World Index.

At the outset we defined the mandate’s objectives in conjunction with the family and their trustees. We then set about reviewing all the existing holdings, using a bespoke template, to present the information, analysis and recommendations in a standardised format. In order to research the stocks, we utilised investment bank portals and our well established network of fund manager contacts. The family have a very long-term investment horizon and the composure to live through periods of significant market volatility. This, alongside their preference for growth stocks – as opposed to value - was key in shaping the portfolio. It was important to build and maintain a portfolio of complimentary ideas and companies that blended well together.

Every 6 months we meet with the family and trustees face-to-face, an audience that includes multiple generations. The latter is key for engagement and helps ensure the investments held capture up and coming themes. These have included luxury, on-line payments, gaming and electric vehicles, alongside an increasing focus on ESG and the sustainability credentials of the businesses held.

We make specific recommendation, on a holding by holding basis, which can be to buy, add, hold, reduce or sell. Sometimes knowing when to take profits or exit entirely is as important as finding exciting new ideas. As a consequence we keep a keen eye on valuations and advise around position sizing accordingly.

Today the portfolios include c.25 stocks, which sit alongside 15 to 20 funds. The latter provide exposure to specific sectors or themes where the family benefit from expert knowledge and a more diversified allocation, as opposed to single stock risk. Complementing these more liquid securities are several private market holdings in technology and battery materials.

We provide a range of such oversight services to a number of our clients, depending on the size and complexity of their wealth, with a minimum of c.£10 million in assets required to access such solutions.

“We have known most of the founding team since before they started Affinity. Our relationship with the team has not just produced great returns but offered amazing support to the family in all sorts of other ways too.”
